We are often paranoid when we use the bathroom, thinking how dirty the toilet seat and other surfaces must be. But, a recent study found out that computer keyboards have bacteria levels that are 5 times higher than toilet seats! That fact should be

alarming enough. And you thought the restroom was the scariest place in the office.

Germs can lurk in unexpected places. Your desk and office cubicle could be dirtier than you thought. It’s a must to do what you can to keep these areas clean. Apart from having office cleaning services, here are simple measures you can do to guard yourself from the invisible enemies.

1.    Wipe surfaces with sanitising wipes.

Who knows what organisms could be present in your office cubicle. Wipe your area every day with sanitising wipes, preferably those containing 60% alcohol. Focus on your keyboard, mouse, phone and other surfaces that are frequently touched by other people. You can stock wipes for personal use or request the management to make them available in common areas.

2.    Clean your keyboard regularly.

As mentioned, your keyboard is a breeding ground for germs. It’s only right to give it a little extra attention. Cleaning your keyboard is quite easy. All you need are cotton swabs, a cleaning solution and a can of compressed air. Blow dust and particles out from your keyboard’s nooks using compressed air. You can also turn it upside down and give it a tap or shake to remove dust and crumbs. Thoroughly clean nooks and surfaces using cotton swabs dipped in a cleaning solution or isopropyl alcohol.

3.    Keep a hand sanitiser handy.

The simplest way you can protect yourself is to keep yourself armed. Always have a sanitising hand gel with you. Look for gels that contain at least 60% alcohol as they are effective in killing germs. Alcohol is a drying agent, which reduces the amount of water or moisture in your skin where organisms can thrive. Apart from hiring office cleaning services, it would be a good idea for the management to provide sanitisers in shared areas. One thing you must note, however, is to never use sanitisers with over 95% alcohol to avoid drying your skin too much.

4.    Wash your hands frequently.

Hand washing is the most basic preventive measure against contamination. Doing this frequently can go a long way but some people still fail to see its significance. Your hands touch hundreds of different surfaces and objects every day. Imagine all the organisms you could get in contact with. Make sure to wash your hands before and after you eat and especially after using the toilet. Letting the water flow through your hands is not enough. Healthcare experts recommend scrubbing your hands for at least 20 seconds to dislodge organisms from your skin.

5.     Avoid sharing personal utensils.

Most of us use personal items at work, specifically mugs or cups for our drinks. Make sure to keep and use your own and avoid sharing them with others to prevent contamination. Furthermore, keep in mind that your office pantry is a shared space, in other words – a germ hotspot. Make sure to wash your utensils after using them and keep them in a clean place.

6.    Store food and snacks properly.

You may be the kind of employee who eats at his or her desk. While this is not wrong, you also have to be responsible for your own space. Keep your food neatly stored in plastic containers instead of bags. Clean the area after you eat to avoid attracting small insects as well as harmful organisms.

It’s not too late to start practicing these simple steps to germ-proof your workspace. Doing these regularly will not only protect yourself but also your colleagues.
